How to Make the Most of Attending a Home Education Conference

The 'end-of-the-school-year' and beginning of summer seems to be the most popular time for home education conferences.  Our family has always looked forward to attending family friendly conferences over the years, which serves a purpose for each of us.  As a home educator since 1996, I look forward to gleaning from those who have been on the journey longer than myself.  I am always encouraged and thankful for the memories that we make.  Conferences provide the benefit of learning ways to make our days more productive and intentional, providing the opportunity to find resources that can bring delight to learning in our home.  Attending a conference, allows me to be able to pick up and look at curriculum, speak with others about various topics that relate to home educating and provide a reminder that we are part of a much larger community than just our four walls.

Conferences range in size from a local setting, with families from around the area ranging in attendance of a hundred or so people, to much larger ones, that are on a state or national level ranging in attendance of thousands of people, usually gathering together in a span of a couple of days.  I have attended many since 1996 and find my happy place is in the hundreds; just enough to refresh and regroup to prepare for my next 'school year'.

Whatever size the conference, it is a good idea to have a plan of what you hope to attain from it.  Today I am going to share some things I do to prior to attending any conference.

Food Storage for Large Families

This week I’m linking to 4 Moms: 35 Kids ~ How Moms of Many Manage and posting on the topic of food storage for large families.  See links at the bottom to their sites for more ideas on making the most of your food storage area, maybe get some storage ideas and money saving tips.

Why have a food "pantry"?
Living in a hurricane possible location, having food on hand and a plan for keeping our perishables from spoiling in a power outage is just sensible. Building a food pantry has cost benefits for our family, too. As most large families, feeding the crew can be expensive if you don’t plan and budget appropriately for it. For this reason and others, I try to buy based on the best unit price and for certain foods will buy based on the healthiest choice. With the savings over time having a food pantry provides, healthier purchases can be made on certain foods while staying within our overall weekly budget. Basically speaking then we have three reasons for having a food pantry: cost benefit, preparedness benefit and nutrition benefit. Every family who has a food pantry will reflect the needs and priorities of that family with amounts of what to have on hand, the types of foods selected to store and the space allotted for doing so factors to consider.

How do we build our food "pantry"?

As a large family, saving money and stretching the ever-decreasing valued dollar is a weekly endeavor. Over time and as our food budget permits, I make purchases when items are on sale, using coupons when available, but mainly focusing on the bottom line…the best unit price. I will buy extras of those sale items {only purchasing the items we like and use} and store them in our food pantry. This method helps to build having extras on hand of the items we consistently use. When meal planning, I have attempted to keep our meals simple, drawing from recipes that use normal, everyday ingredients. Having a meal plan helps to save money and save food waste.

Where do we make purchases from to build our food "pantry"?

1. Buying in bulk {i.e. Sam’s Club, Costco Wholesale Club, etc.}

2. Purchasing through a food co-op {i.e. BreadBeckers, Montana Wheat Company, etc.}

3. taking advantage of buy one get one free offers

4. using store and manufacturer’s coupons or competitor ads being match by select retailers {Wal*Mart will match any valid competitors ad for the exact item, Publix will accept select competitors’ coupons and some stores double coupons…ask your local grocery or discount chain in your area to see what they will do}

5. purchasing meat from local farm for no hormones, no antibiotics, grain/grass fed purposes {i.e. beef and pork}

Other options could include: purchasing from local farmers or farmer’s markets for fresh/organic produce or even an organic produce co-op, growing your own fruits and vegetables or bartering with those who do, and discount food chains or outlets.

Where do we store these savings and how?

I have posted on storage ideas in the past here, but this week I will cover more specifically our food storage areas.

1. Meats ~ if bought in bulk from the grocery or wholesale club, then we will repackage it into freezer bags based on our families’ consumption and date the package, remove air and lay flat in our upright freezer {maximizing the space}

2. Can goods and boxed items ~ I keep opened and a base amount in our inside kitchen pantry…I’ll call this my working pantry and my surplus is kept in our garage storage area.

     a. First, my kitchen pantry storage:

          i. Items such as pasta, dry beans, baking supplies, snacks, dry cereals, etc. of which we would use on a frequent basis are kept inside and stored in glass jars like these or these {both made in the USA}, Tupperware storage containers like these, plastic storage bins, or food buckets.

          ii. When my base count gets low, I will refill that item into its storage container {i.e. Pastas are removed from their manufacturer packaging and put in the labeled storage container designated. Dry beans are emptied from their packaging and kept in glass jars. Snack items such as popcorn, animal crackers, snack bars, crackers, etc. are removed from their manufacturer boxes and stored in their designated containers. This allows my kitchen pantry to stay organized, gives me a visual on when my stock is getting low {since the containers are clear} and keeps food from spoiling, as their containers are air tight.

     b. Next, my garage storage area {you can read a little about it here}:

          i. I now have floor to ceiling adjustable wall shelving {thanks to my dear husband} for storing my extra can items, boxed items and room for my 5 gallon buckets underneath {these are the ones with air-tight gamma lids on them}

          ii. I have used the old storage shelf for putting wheat buckets, canning supplies and seasonal kitchen supplies on.

          iii. I have a couple wire rack shelves for storing bulk paper products, storage containers and baskets {for our ongoing organizing & re-organizing projects in our home}, hospitality items {i.e. drink containers, trays and divided platters, chargers, etc.} and bulk drinks {water bottles, flavored juices, etc.}

3. Perishables ~ Items I will stock up on such as milk, eggs, cheese, in-season fruits and veggies are kept in our kitchen refrigerator with extras kept in our garage refrigerator. This method allows me to take advantage of sales, thus saving money in the long run.

For our large family, doing items 1-6 above are beneficial for our pocket books as well as our health. Side benefits from having a food pantry include having food during slow economic times {aren’t we there now?}, for preparedness in response to natural disasters {hurricanes, flooding, power outages, etc.} when trips to the store may not be possible and even ministering to others who may be in need.

I draw from the Scriptures in providing for our family without becoming out-of-balance or extreme. Our faith and trust is in the Lord to provide therefore, our trust and hope is NOT in our food pantry or earthly possessions. Here are a few to verses to encourage you as well:

  • A slack hand causes poverty, but the hand of the diligent makes rich. He who gathers in summer is a prudent son, but he who sleeps in harvest is a son who brings shame. Proverbs 10:4-5 {not to be one who would seek riches of this earth, but on the contrary, one who is willing to work so their future is secure}
  •  She is like the ships of the merchant; she brings her food from afar. She rises while it is yet night and provides food for her household and portions for her maidens. She considers a field and buys it with the fruit of her hands she plants a vineyard. She opens her hand to the poor and reaches out her hands to the needy. She is not afraid of snow for her household, for all her household are clothed in scarlet. Strength and dignity are her clothing, and she laughs at the time to come. She looks well to the ways of her household and does not eat the bread of idleness. Proverbs 31:14-16, 18, 20-21, 25, 27 {to be a woman who is resourceful, is profitable in her undertakings, is giving, is aware of the needs of her own family and insures those needs are met, is a preparer and secure in the days ahead and works diligently for her family}
  • Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal, but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also. Matthew 6:19-21 {the balance…not to be so consumed with a food storage pantry and its contents…or anything else for that matter, that it becomes the hope and source of faith and trust ~ not to replace the Lord who is over all}

Basically, my hope is to be the best “keeper of my home” as possible, drawing from the Lord’s word for how to do that, gleaning from others so that we can be good stewards of what He provides and trusting in Him to provide for all our needs as He sees fit to do.

May you seek His direction for ways to maximize what space He has given you and His wisdom to prepare as He leads you.

Blessings ~

School Preparations

Every year summer seems to be the time I utilize for planning, organizing and preparing for the next “school year”. I tend to make a list of areas that need to be focused on, along with redoing my meal plan 5 week rotation schedule (for breakfast, lunch, afternoon snack & dinner), creating a new AM/PM chore chart, lesson plans and daily family schedule (which is always needing much tweaking each year…nursing babies, changing “seasons of life”, activities and college classes to factor in).

I have tried to utilize my spare moments and time gifted...“Dad taking the kids out for a while”... to organize and tackle some of the more involved projects.

Here’s what I’ve been busy doing "in between life" these days to help prepare for our upcoming school year…which is coming way TOO fast:

Cleaning out, purging and organizing our school closet
(All school supplies are sorted through and labeled, all curriculums have been re-evaluated, sorted by subject and shelves labeled, game & puzzle boxes repaired then returned to nicely cleaned shelves…sure feels good when things are in order and easily located.)

Computer programs have been loaded and lessons are soon to be done
(We are venturing down a new curriculum road this year, as our season of life requires it…the two older boys will be using Switched on Schoolhouse {along with a few lapbook studies to compliment the SOS lessons} and ABeka video again for Alyssa…we try to do the first three years of school using ABeka – excellent phonics/reading program)

Meal planning and chore charts complete…wahoo!

Lots of books and learning materials pulled to be donated, shared and sold (in the future…) which makes room for the materials we will use this year and future ones.

Cleaned out and organized the kitchen pantry
(This makes meal preparations and food shopping trips to be simplified…keeping things in order saves money and time.)

Cleaning out closets and dresser drawers/baskets
(With 9 people living in less than 2000 square feet, every inch counts – besides my children seem to be growing by leaps and bounds (they are good eaters) – so this needs to be done almost quarterly…back-to-school time seems like the perfect time to do it again.)

Setting up school bins for each child to hold this year’s books, supplies and portfolio

Well, that is a glimpse at some of my preparations for this upcoming year. Still much to fit in before we start our first day on the 16th, Lord willing…on to working on my daily schedule and then lesson plans.

Praying to “start well” and “finish well”…will require God’s grace, my consistency and diligence and my children’s teachable spirit and will to do things thoroughly and completely…a good attitude will go a long way, too.

Blessings as you plan and prepare your upcoming year ~

Desire for a Fruitful Week ~ My To-Do List

Well, have you ever wondered what a day or week is like in our home?  I can tell you, not a day goes by that I don't have a list going.  As the summer quickly passes, so do the days I have to get things in order for our season of life and the days ahead.  So much to do, so little time...only the truth of the matter is, God daily gives us enough time to do all He directs us to do.

Okay, I have a lot I hope to accomplish this week and thought it would help keep me motivated and accountable if I did a To-Do List post...of course, the Lord will direct my steps this week (as He does every week).  As I typed out my book list, I already found myself analyzing it to see what could "realistically" be completed..."realistically" being that it will be a four day week for me, with three dependant little ones every day mixed into the equation (onewho is potty training - she's really doing it herself mostly...she couldn't wait for me any longer) and then I'll be down two of my older helpers on Monday and Tuesday.  Okay, with that real picture painted here goes...no rose colored glasses here.  :-)

To-Do List for the Week of July 12, 2010 (Monday – Thursday)
(with hopes to complete it through delegation and teamwork this week AND in addition to our normal daily chores)

Family:

o Take Mom on her errands Tuesday
o Read aloud to the children each day

Errands & Appointments:

o Water heater replacement on Monday
o Make appointments

Homeschooling:

o Complete a curriculum plan for each child (that would be three this year)
o Complete a Curriculum Fair Battle Plan to use on Friday & Saturday (and as I make online purchases
o Set up bins for each child to hold curriculum, school supplies, daily schedule, portfolio notebook for the current year, etc.
o Prepare folders/clipboards for each child to utilize during the Homeschool Convention on Friday & Saturday (older children: note taking supplies; younger children: “busy kits” to help occupy their time during workshops)
o Go through a growing corner of homeschool materials (3 baskets) and either put away, donate or sell
o Type a master sheet of all the curriculum, learning materials and books I desire to sell online (I’m doubting I will have enough time already.)
o Order Girls' Group curriculum

Home:

o Stay on top of laundry every day (wash, dry, fold, hang AND put away)
o Cook according to menu plan each day
o Work on menu plan for remainder of this month
o Work on a revised 4 week rotating menu plan (breakfast, lunch, afternoon snack & dinner) for upcoming school year
o Clean off bedroom desk
o Organize movie bins (going through and determining what to keep, donate & sell)
o Clean sitting room which means:
  1. Go through EACH toy bin and weed out excess to donate, give or trash
  2. Go through book basket removing some and rotating summer fun reading books in (all remove excess to donate, sell or give away)
  3. Thoroughly dust furniture & shelving
  4. Thoroughly bleach the window tracks & wipe all paneling
o Go through each child’s closet & dresser drawers/clothes baskets to REDUCE, REORGANIZE and RELOCATE (via storage, donation or giving away)
o Front entry items to do:
  1. Wipe all screen and aluminum framing, as well as ceiling
  2. Clean side light windows
  3. Prune plants
  4. Polish door knocker
  5. Create small sitting area (look for consigned chair/table)
o Clean inside of the refrigerator

Home maintenance:

o Install terra cotta bird bath
o Replace sensor light bulb
o Add chlorine to fountain & clean stone border
o Clean window tracks

Well, that should do it for this week.  I'll try to post to let you know how it goes...one thing's for sure ~ we won't be bored this week!  Maybe, we'll try to go to the beach one evening as a reward and further motivator (not for me, but for the kids) to work together and get it DONE!

In retrospect...I should probably write down ~ SLEEP.  :-)

Blessings ~

A Weekend of Work....

With Mark at continuing education classes on Friday and Saturday, it was a perfect time to get some things done around the house. Although, Zach had his final paper due for Con Law on Sunday, he was minimally worked into the “work” festivities, too.

Here’s what this weekend’s To-Do List consisted of (highlighting shows what was finished):

 Finish stocking and labeling the Activity Bins (project from last week)

 Laundry (it’s a daily to-do item…but I love empty laundry bins and don’t want to get behind)

 Maintaining inside of home (kitchen, bedrooms, living area) while working on outside projects

 Major Focus Area…Deep clean garage (with my direction): write up two stove-sized boxes of Goodwill donations (I have nixed the garage sale idea…will donate most, consign some and Craigslist some other items); purchase another shelving unit to better organize our large family’s needs (extra pantry/storage space, designated shelving for activity bins (on last week’s to-do list); add wall shelf above freezer/refrigerator for storing party supplies, canning supplies and out-of-season kitchen items; gather/photo/post used curriculum for sale items; straighten business/personal retention boxes & surplus co-op/office supplies; straighten business stock items (this is part of operating a business from the home…the garage becomes a warehouse, too); clear counter top and reorganize for educational game area (old computer for learning games and radio for books-on-tape); purge the every many shoes and organize the shoe rack; re-organize and inventory the pantry items and paper products; purge toy bins and re-organize bike area; go through “camping”, “paint supplies”, “automotive care”, “cleaning supplies”, and “sports” areas…put items back in proper places, make sure areas/bins are properly labeled and condense were possible; shampoo garage carpet (yes, we have carpeting in 2/3’s of the garage because it provides extra storage/play areas…and yes, we do park a vehicle in there, too. In Florida, there are no basements so the garage becomes extra living/storage area for many…as in our case, it serves many purposes.)

Purge two cabinets of ABeka books to sell some (re-store others for upcoming children); store seasonal books/units in newly created space (i.e. Resurrection, Thanksgiving, Christmas)

Grocery shopping for the upcoming week (with all the children…giving Zach some time to work on that paper uninterrupted)

Take my Mom to ACE Hardware (Zach – first thing Saturday morning)

 Photograph items to post on Craigslist and the used curriculum sites (TUAC yahoo group, home school classifieds, local home school yahoo group site and Veg Source) then begin writing up the posts (this will probably not be done this weekend!)

Meal planning

 Clean bird baths and fill bird feeder

 Weed garden

 Drill holes in planter for geraniums (looking very water logged!)

Wash outside windows & squeegee

 Use cob web broom and rid the perimeter of the house from webs; brush around the perimeter of inside garage door & ceiling corners

Dust Florida room (our enclosed sitting/play area)

These items are not feasible to be accomplished without TEAMWORK…it takes all of us working together to get the work done (especially with little ones in the mix and the oldest limited on his availability). What great opportunity the Lord gives to teach our children good work ethic and shaping good character through working! We work a lot, but when the time comes to play, it makes it all the sweeter. It makes hospitality possible without going into a state of panic, because we work hard throughout the year to keep things manageable – Lord willing.

Being in less than a 2000 square foot home with 9 people, homeschooling and a home business means space must be utilized to its fullest, while still providing enjoyment and a clutter-free feeling. It is a continual task of assessing, re-assessing and re-organizing as our family grows and needs change, but what the Lord has done with this home built for three is amazing…I would have never imagined there would be 9 of us living in a house we built for three. So, very thankful for His continued provision, direction and creative ideas on how to maximize our home to its fullest – a weekend of work and the fruit will be a Sabbath of family and rest and upcoming week of fun, Lord willing.

Blessings ~

Victorian Scrapbook Sneak Peek...

Just a little peak of what is to come...Victorian Scrapbook Follow-up Class of the Young Lady in Me Class we attended in December.  Those in attendance will have an opportunity to complete an album of the 2-day class they attended, while being able to add to their beautiful keepsake as future "teas" and "young lady events" are scheduled.

Pattern of 6"x6" album fabric (has a clear plastic slip cover - but I removed it to take a close up without the glare from the slipcover)...a few color choices to select from.

Title page with teapot...a sample of several different embellishments we will use in our class:  die-cut, 3-D stickers, ribbon, rhinestones, punched tags and more...

Part of their scrapbook will contain a two page layout of the mom & daughter together (each individual young lady with their mom - no peeks - just Alyssa & me)...with heirloom and victorian buttons, 3-D sticker, gold matted title header and Scripture...

A little glimpse of what I have been preparing lately and looking forward to hosting soon!

Because of Him ~

Prayer, Planning & Preparation - Part 4 (Preparation)

Prayers are continual for this coming year and the new season we will be entering into. Planning is finished: schedules (the most challenging yet), chore charts and meal planning for the start of our school year are complete - next will be the trial run in a few weeks to see where they will need to be tweaked. Preparations have been underway for the changes that we are expecting and have planned for (of course, the Lord knows how He will direct each day...we can only plan for them ;P).

This post will complete the 3 part topic of Prayer, Planning & Preparations, of which I will cover the last part. What does it mean to prepare? According to Noah Websters 1828 Dictionary, prepare means: to make all things ready; to put things in suitable order; to make one's self ready. Just like with planning we can look to the Bible for examples of what it means to prepare. The Proverbs 31 woman did not wait until there was a 'need' to begin preparing, but instead looked well to the ways of her household and gives us an example of putting to 'action' what she had been called to do as a wife, mother and manager of her home. (Proverbs 31:10-31) Being a wife, mother and manager of the home are a good work, which the Lord has prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them. (Ephesians 2:10) As we go about preparing, remember that we are to be doing so as unto the Lord. (1 Corinthians 10:31)

There are many areas that need to be prepared: 1) spiritually. I need to gird up with His word so that I do not fall prey to the enemy - this world puts forth images DAILY of what it deems to be good, what women should be seeking after and what focus a woman should have. If I am not actively combating that with TRUTH (His word), then I can become susceptible to desiring the wrong things or believing that the work I do is not important. I have had days of doubt and discouragement...we all do. But this is why girding up against the daily bombardment of the worlds values is so important. What women are called to do in the Bible is one of the most important works that can be done - training the next generation...sending forth arrows that fly straight...ready to stand against the schemes of the devil.

I have also had to assess each year what changes to expect (this year: the added blessing of another child, children growing physically and what their educational needs will be, the added responsibilities of daily home management as our family increases in size, continuing to help my husband with the Lord's provision of entrepreneurship - going on 8 years, etc.). Some of this requires preparing our 2) home for those changes.
Each year, a list is made of projects that we will do to help our home stay maintained, run more efficiently and serve our family based on the needs of that year. Additionally, this year we have looked at ways to make our home more energy efficient, space efficient and inviting to our guests. Over the summer we "planned"/scheduled a few family work days to complete items on that list, with hopes to have a majority of it completed before we start school back next month and before the baby comes soon after that.

We always marvel at God's perfect wisdom. When we built our home 15 years ago, it was for a family of 3, with no intent of increasing that number. This very home (with the addition of 2 rooms in 2006) continues to serve our family - soon to be family of 9 - very well. It is not large in comparison to most homes today, however it continues to be a place filled with family, friends and ministry to this day...the Lord's faithful provision.

Another area of preparation, was for assessing 3) education. Curriculum was evaluated, learning needs assessed and items were purchased to help facilitate learning. Over the past month, I have had the blessing of a mother's helper one day a week which has allowed me to prepare for the upcoming year. What a tremendous blessing it has been to have the help of a young lady caring and playing with the younger children, so that I could plan the lessons for each child for the year, review materials that we plan to cover and gather together the learning materials (making copies, setting up notebooks to help keep things moving, etc.) which we will use throughout the year. Preparing in this area will help keep things running smoothly, help us not waste valuable time and having our schedules in place lets everyone know what they should be working toward each day.

Now - does this mean that everything is perfect? Does this mean that things will always go smoothly and according to the 'plan'? NO! We must remember that the Lord directs our steps. We may deviate from the plan, however it will be there when we need to come back to it and allow us to pick right back up. By girding up each day and putting our plan into action, will give many opportunities throughout the year for blessings that come with being prepared. Blessings to minister to others, to serve and extend hospitality and a more peaceful home are just a few.

May your time in prayer, planning and the preparations you undertake bring you peace, joy and blessings this year - even on difficult days. :-)

"The Lord bless you and keep you;
the Lord make his face to shine upon
you and be gracious to you;
the Lord lift up his countenance upon
you and give you peace."
Numbers 6:24-26

Prayer, Planning, and Preparations - Part 1 (Scripture's Exhortation)

Summer is a time to rest and relax from 'normal' routines. Traveling takes place, beach days, fellowship gatherings, VBS, etc...

Summer is also a great time to regroup from the prior school year, review accomplishments and reassess the prior year's goals. How was last year? Did you have many rabbit trails that took you away from what the Lord had laid on your heart to do? Maybe you referred to your goals throughout the year and were able to maintain focus and perspective. Maybe His direction was down a difficult road. No matter what last year held, know that He was not surprised by any of it and that as a believer we can be confident that "all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose." (Romans 8:28)

So, where do we go from here? I would say the first thing should be to seek the Lord through PRAYER. Adore Him for being the One we can turn to for direction and instruction. Confess your weakness and need for Him to lead you. Thank Him for hope, His wisdom and the gift of His word (our primary resource for knowing who He is and what He calls us to do). And finally Seek Him for direction for this coming year.

As the Lord gives you insight through His word, begin PLANNING. Remember to "trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him and he will make straight your paths." Proverbs 3:5-6 (emphasis added) Also, "commit your work to the Lord, and your plans will be established." Proverbs 16:3

Finally, begin to PREPARE. We can "go to the ant" in Proverbs 6. "She prepares her bread in summer and gathers her food in harvest." Proverbs 6:8 And the woman of Proverbs 31, "looks well to the ways of her household and does not eat the bread of idleness." Proverbs 31:27 Preparing means to put into action what has been planned; to be ready. The Lord tells us in Ephesians 2:10, "for we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them." What a GOOD WORK it is to love and teach our children - therefore, PRAY, PLAN and PREPARE so that we may do what He has called us to do.

May this post encourage you to begin with joy, put aside lies of the Master Deceiver and press on, being confident that He has equipped you to do so. In the upcoming days, I plan to post some practical applications of planning and preparing for next year, along with some resources that may be an encouraging "resources" to you.
